You are following someone else’s genetics
The routine you copied worked. That part is real. It worked for a person whose skin holds water differently to yours, reacts differently to yours and makes oil on a different schedule. The influencer, the friend who swears by it, the five star review: all of them started somewhere you did not.
How much of that is baked in? In twins, the severity of acne came out around 85% inherited. You can execute someone else’s routine perfectly and still get a different face, because you were never the same starting material.

Same dry skin, three different reasons
Three people wake up with the same tight, flaky face. One has a barrier that leaks water. One has an immune system that reacts to nothing in particular. One has perfectly ordinary skin being stripped by the exact routine they bought to fix it.
They walk into the same shop and get sold the same rich cream. Two of them are wasting their money, and none of them can tell which two. Dry, oily and sensitive describe what reached the surface. They say nothing about what put it there.

Your skin came with instructions
Most people picture genetics as parts that work or parts that are broken. Skin is rarely that. The differences that matter sit in the DNA deciding how loudly a gene runs, where, and when. Nothing is broken. Your settings are yours.
One letter inside a gene called IRF4, nowhere near the part that builds the protein, changes a control switch. Pigment machinery runs differently. Out the other end come freckles, and how easily you burn.

Reading those switches is the part that only recently became possible. There are roughly five million of them in you, and almost none have been studied one at a time. Models like Google DeepMind’s AlphaGenome changed that: rather than hunting for your variant in a paper, they read your sequence and predict what your version does. Which switch runs hotter. Which gene turns up.
What changes when you can read them
The blindfold comes off. You stop testing at random and start with the thing most likely to be true of you. If your barrier is the weak point, you repair it before you pile on actives. If your pigment responds hard, sun protection stops being a chore and becomes the whole strategy. If inflammation is the driver, you are in the wrong aisle entirely.
Your habits still decide how far any of it goes. In identical twins, smoking and sun pulled two genetically identical faces apart over decades. Your genes tell you where you are sensitive. What you do decides how much that costs you. That is the useful pairing, and half of it has been missing.
Knowing your genome does not narrow your choices. It aims them.
